History

When the Salisbury Flavor Company of Salisbury, North Carolina went bankrupt in 1917, L. Kirby Reeler and other invested businessmen purchased the company, renamed it the Saddle Up Food and Beverage Company, and began production of Salisbury Steak Sauce. On every label was a recipe for "Saddle Up Salisbury Steak", which helped popularize the sauce across the country. That same year, Reeler purchased a recipe for a cherry flavored soda from a Saint Louis flavor salesman, which eventually became PepStep. While PepStep was always known for its cherry flavor, direct competition from Nuka-Cola led to the amount of sugar and caffeine in the recipe to be doubled.

The family of L. Kirby Reeler ran the Saddle Up company since its founding, and his great-grandson L. Clifford “Cliff” Reeler was CEO and president of Saddle Up Food and Beverage Co. right up until the Great war. Cliff's main contribution to the company legacy was his partnership with Super Pack Co., which led to preserved portions of Saddle Up Salisbury Steak being distributed across the world.
