Yorktown

AN AMERICAN HEROINE – FROM WWII TO VIETNAM

The USS YORKTOWN (CV-10) was the tenth aircraft carrier to serve in the United States Navy. Under construction as BON HOMME RICHARD, this new Essex-class carrier was renamed in honor of YORKTOWN (CV-5) sunk at the epic Battle of Midway (June 1942). Built in an amazing 16 ½ months at Newport News, Virginia, YORKTOWN was commissioned on April 15, 1943. World War II’s famous “Fighting Lady” would participate significantly in the Pacific offensive that began in late 1943 and ended with the defeat of Japan in 1945. YORKTOWN received the Presidential Unit Citation and earned 11 battle stars for service in World War II.

In the 1950s, YORKTOWN was modernized to operate jet aircraft as an attack carrier (CVA). In 1957, she was re-designated an anti-submarine aircraft carrier (CVS), and would later earn 5 battle stars for service off Vietnam (1965-68). The ship also recovered the Apollo 8 astronauts and capsule (December 1968). YORKTOWN was decommissioned in 1970 and placed in reserve.

In 1975, this historic ship was towed from Bayonne, NJ to Charleston to become the centerpiece of Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum.

THE SHIP THAT WOULD NOT DIE

USS LAFFEY (DD-724) is the most decorated World War II era US Destroyer still in existence. DD-724 was named in honor of LAFFEY (DD-459), sunk during the Naval Battle for Guadalcanal (13 November 1942). Both ships were named in honor of Seaman Bartlett Laffey, a Civil War Medal of Honor recipient.

AN ICONIC COLD WAR SUBMARINE

The only GUPPY III submarine preserved in the U.S., the USS CLAMAGORE (SS-343) is Patriots Point iconic Cold War submarine.

History

It is a miracle the massive chains anchoring the USS Yorktown and USS Laffey held after the bombs fell; the USS Clamagore was less fortunate. Still the ships took on water and the damp structures became the home of many wasteland creatures. In the years following the opening of Vault 43, the massive ships became an object of desire for survivors looking to seek out new places to call home.

It wasn't long thereafter that large parties of settlers set out to clear the old ships of threats and establish a new settlement. After a lengthy struggle, Yorktown was formed inside and on top of the aircraft carrier. They built a large retractable bridge they could use to control access to the ship, and developed into a successful settlement that trades with Battery City and helps keep the waters safe from pirates using smaller vessels kept docked nearby.

Notable People

Yorktown itself is a large landmark on the Cooper River, and anyone who travels along the Cooper has probably seen one of the Yorktown Navy patrol boats on the water.

Mayor Georgia Ramsay

A stern and serious woman, Mayor Ramsay is short with her words but her list of accomplishments is long. Having run many successful counter-raids against pirates in the harbor, she was a natural choice for Mayor of Yorktown. The position comes with more military responsibilities than most settlements, and requires someone who can lead sailors just as well as farmers.

Chief Officer Josef Frye

The chief officer of Yorktown is the 2nd in command of the Yorktown Navy behind the mayor, and Josef Frye is a shining example of the position. Having served under Mayor Georgia Ramsay during her years as chief officer, he knows the waters between Yorktown and Battery City like the back of his hand.

Chief Officer Frye has a reputation for giving no quarter to pirates they capture, and rumor has it Admiral Freeman has a large bounty on his head.

Yorktown Navy

The Yorktown Navy is a small elite force of marines who defend the waters between Yorktown and Battery City for traders and travelers alike. They are well organized, well trained, and are comprised of the best and brightest Yorktown has to offer. Aside from the founding mayor, every mayor of Yorktown has been a chief officer of the navy.

Chief Engineer Sebastian Ebbs

Where the chief officer is the top civil office under the mayor, and deals with internal issues to Yorktown as opposed to external threats. Bastian Ebbs was only recently appointed chief engineer, and is the youngest person to ever fill the role. Bastian earned the title through tireless pursuit of improving the technology that serves as the infrastructure for Yorktown which in turn has led to a better equipped navy. While older engineers may hold a grudge against him for how quickly he rose through the ranks, they all respect his talent.

Chief Engineer Ebbs has put out notice that they are looking for any information about a cold fusion generator in decent condition.
